Following Hurricane Katrina, there was a huge response from local residents who wanted to be trained in Disaster Services.  Today, it remains one of the more popular types of volunteer opportunities at the American Red Cross.  There are two categories of disaster volunteers:

  • Disaster Action Team (DAT) volunteers provide relief locally, day and night. They set up shelters, conduct damage assessments, and work one-on-one with local disaster victims to meet their immediate needs.
  • Disaster Services Human Resource System (DSHR) volunteer support efforts of the Red Cross anywhere in the U.S. during national disasters.
