As the disaster preparedness and training leader, the American Red Cross offers numerous programs to teach young people skills for managing the unexpected. Below are the classes we offer for youth:

Babysitter's Training
Target Audience: Ages 11-15
This course teaches young people the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to care for infants and school-age children through video-based learning, skills training, and discussion. Specifically, participants learn skills such as responding to emergencies, administering basic first aid, rescue breathing, decision making, communicating with parents, and feeding, diapering and caring for infants.

Basic Aid Training (BAT)
Target Audience: Grades 3-5
In this course, children learn emergency response skills, rescue breathing, and ways to prevent and care for choking, wounds, nosebleeds, falls and animal bites. It includes training in fire safety, poisoning, water accidents, substance abuse and more.

First Aid for Children Today (FACT)
Target Audience: Grades K-3
Using characters called the "Critter Clan," FACT brings important health and safety information to young children at a level to which they can relate. Topics include hygiene and health habits, personal safety, and injury prevention.

First Aid Preparedness - Level 1
Target Audience: Grades K-5
Participants in this non-certification course learn about the five steps to preparedness; how to recognize and respond to the most common family emergencies; how and when to call 911; what to do when someone is choking; and how to respond to accidents and injuries.

First Aid Preparedness - Level 2
Target Audience: Grades 6-8
This program introduces participants to the concept of emergency preparedness and the principles of basic first aid. Volunteerism and helping others is stressed during this two-hour course.

Masters of Disasters
Target Audience: Grades K-8
The American Red Cross has developed the Masters of Disaster curriculum to help teachers integrate important disaster safety information into their regular lesson plans for such core subjects as language arts, math, science, and social studies. This curriculum supplements lessons educators are already teaching while incorporating information for students to help them prepare for disasters and stay safe in an emergency. The curriculum was developed by the American Red Cross in collaboration with educators and numerous subject-matter experts in weather-related and science fields.

When I'm In Charge
Target Audience - Ages 8 - 11
"When I'm In Charge" is a two and one-half hour community class which guides students through scripted role plays, discussions and critical-thinking activities centered on teaching children about responsibilities, home safety, how to get help and many other issues.
